The Samsung UN46C8000 is a 46-inch TV packed with high-end features including 3D capability.  This LED TV is part of Samsung’s new 8000 series which includes the larger 55-inch TV the UN55C8000.

This LED TV uses Samsung’s latest technology in LED television with its LED Edge Light Backlight Technology with local dimming.  This TV supports 1080p format with a refresh rate of 240 Hz.  Its display format will make the most of your HD videos and Blu-ray player.  This Samsung TV has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The fast refresh rate is ideal for playing fast action films with reduced judders or blurring.  The TV’s 240 Hz refresh rate is four times faster than some of the less expensive TVs that feature 60 Hz refresh rates.  The TV’s system will make the most of your Blu-ray experience and HD viewing.  This TV has a very good overall motion performance.

The backlit technology used in this Samsung TV enables it to produce deep black levels and high peak brightness performances.  Deep black levels are very good giving the TV the capability to produce great details in shadows or dark scenes.  Its contrast ratio is also above satisfactory and is among the best in the market.  Color accuracy is above average as well.  Its backlit technology produces vivid and clear colors with no over saturation or noticeable errors.

Its main feature is its 3D capability.  This TV’s 3D feature with its fast refresh rate and excellent contrast ratio and color performances produces excellent 3D scenes.  Viewing3D movies from your Blu-ray players will surely be a pleasure with this TV.  This TV also has 2D to 3D conversion capability transforming your ordinary 2D movies and shows to 3D.  The conversion creates a background and foreground difference out of your ordinary 2D to create a 3D effect.  The outcome is far from an original 3D scene with side-to-side depth to go with its foreground and background difference to provide an excellent 3D scene.  2D to 3D conversion is present in some 3D TVs like the ones by Sony or Toshiba – this feature though, is not present in the Panasonic 3D TVs.  This Samsung TV doesn’t come with 3D glasses though.  Therefore, to use the TV’s 3D feature you need to purchase a 3D kit for about $300 separately.

Audio output is thru the TVs two mounted speakers each rated at ten Watts.  The TV’s speakers sit at the bottom side of the panel with its full 20-Watt output directed to the front.  There are controls for Bass, Treble and Balance.

Connections available for the TV includes two USB 2.0 (4 pin USB Type A), four HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A), one Component video input (RCA phono x 3), one VGA input (15 pin HD D-Sub, HD-15), one Digital audio output (optical – TOSLINK), one Network (RJ-45), one Audio line-in (Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm), one Composite video input (RCA phono), an Audio line-in (RCA phono x 2) and one Audio line-out (Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm) port.  All ports are located at the TV’s back.

The USB ports supports playback of your digital audio, stills or videos for instant access to your thumb drive contents.  This TV also boasts a decent amount of internet applications in its Apps menu.  Connections for Yahoo, Vudu, YouTube or info like News, Sports, Stocks and Weather are available.  This Samsung TV doesn’t have a Wi-Fi connection available in its system like in the Sony or Vizio TVs.

The TV comes with a swivel stand that looks very sleek and elegant.  The silver, four-legged stand is something new out of Samsung’s TVs.  The LCD screen mostly occupies the panel’s front side.  Surrounding the screen is a silver, shiny, brushed-metal bezel with a transparent plastic lining around the edge.  At the bottom of the panel, along the transparent plastic edge, are touch-sensitive controls for the TV’s basic commands – power, channel, volume and menu.

One of the things that didn’t change is the Samsung’s menu system.  This Samsung TV still features the same easy to navigate and user-friendly menu like its predecessors.  The blue graphics that are highlighted against a dark background are easy to read.  There are also captions at the bottom of the screen explaining each menu selected for user’s guidance.

This Samsung TV is also ENERGY STAR qualified giving it energy efficiency in both operational and stand-by or sleep modes.  The TV’s dimensions are 42.9 x 0.9 x 25.1 inches (W x D x H) and weighs 37.5 lbs.  This is an amazingly very thin TV.  This is one of the slimmest TV in the market.  Samsung’s Edge Lit technology has made it possible to push the limits of LCD construction making it possible to manufacture slimmer TVs while retaining color and image qualities.

The TV also comes with a remote with touch-sensitive controls.  Its chrome in color and has a round-edge giving it a sleek and elegant look to complement the TV’s aesthetics.  The face of the remote is plain and flat with no buttons protruding from its facade; instead, it has touch-sensitive controls.  One big disadvantage of this setup is that you need to look at the remote when using it.  This could be challenging especially when the TV is in a dark room or environment.

The TV’s over all panel design, mounting stand and remote control is a departure from the basic Samsung models.  Although it seems bold, out of Samsung’s ordinary, it is definitely a welcome change, and the new look provides a sleek and elegant feel to the new design.

One of the TV’s disadvantages is its narrow viewing angle as observed in many Samsung LED TVs like the Samsung LN32C350.  Viewing angle for this TV is only about 45 degrees from the center.

One of the TV’s competitors in this category is the Panasonic TC-P50VT20 3D Plasma TV.  The Panasonic TV also features a good black deep black level and overall contrast ratio.  Motion performance is also above average with no noticeable blurriness or judders when playing fast action films.  The Samsung TV holds the edge in peak brightness performance and overall aesthetic look.  The Panasonic TV with its use of Plasma technology boasts of a wider viewing angle with 80 degrees compared to the Samsung’s narrow effective viewing angle of only 45 degrees.

You may also want to check on the Sony KDL46-EX700 TV.  Although the Sony TV is not 3D capable, it features a stronger contrast ratio and color accuracy performances.  Connectivity options are almost identical, and both TVs support 1080p format.  The Sony TV costs about $1000 less than the Samsung 3D TV.

Overall, the Samsung 3D TV is a fully packed LED TV with all the features geared towards consumer satisfaction and viewing pleasure.  Its 3D capability is among the best in the market, 2D performance is above average and the experience of viewing 3D images from your Blu-ray device is priceless.  The TV’s price will be a little intimidating, but once you see the features this TV has to offer, definitely, this is one must-have TV.
