Review
Prison Break is one of those shows that just draws you in and does NOT let go. Of every show that currently airs on TV, this show is one of three that could cause me to have a heart attack (the others being 24 and The Shield). The way this show is scripted is, each episode leads right into the next, like a complex novel woven together with scenes of intense pressure. The scenes are usually life and death. You would think this would get old, yet it does not.
I watched this as it aired on TV, but missed the last few episodes (due to the writers strike, and me not knowing when the show was coming back on, I lost interest) I’m so glad I got the opportunity to sit back and watch season 3 on blu-ray. Even though I have already seen the majority of the third season, I was still hooked from beginning to end.
On Blu-ray (and dvd) the visuals are amazing, the dirt, the grit, it all looks so real, its like I’m there. The atmosphere at Sona is very dirty, and very intense.
I don’t want to give to much away, as the joy of watching this show is the joy of “uncovering” the plots and the mystery as it goes on. As such I do not like to know what is going to happen, I like to be surprised, so, pardon my brief overview of what happens early on (I will not spoil anything big, everything I tell is revealed in the first two episodes).
At the end of season 2, Michael gets sent off to another prison, Sona. The Company wants him there to break someone out of prison, in order to get Michael to cooperate, they kidnap LJ (his brother’s son) and Sarah (his love).
We get to see more of our favorite cast members from previous episodes, I love how they are able to keep bringing them back, and having it seem normal.
Due to the writers strike, this season is very short, 13 episodes. They are 13 very good episodes, and next season (which starts soon and I will be covering on an episode by episode basis), will see the miraculous return of a much loved cast member. I really cannot wait.
As a TV show, I give this a 5 out of 5. This is one of my favorite shows on TV. It doesn’t matter who you are, as long as you are not opposed to violence, I can’t see someone not liking this show, and not becoming highly addicted. To be blunt, I like this show better than 24, and even more so, I think it is the best show of its format on TV. It’s hard to go back to Oz after watching Prison Break. Everything about Prison Break is done right, I love this show, I hope it continues for many years, and I hope they go through with the spin-off that was mentioned last year.
I rate the video a 5 out of 5.
A very strong representation. Each scene is beautifully laid out, everything is sharp, the colors are vibrant when needed, and gritty when needed. You feel like you are there. Unlike the broadcast, these episodes are ripe with details, and have NO artifacts.
Audio 5 out of 5Nothing short of amazing, the sound effects hit you when needed, the dialogue is strong and very audible. It really draws you in. As does the ambience.
Extras a 4 out of 5, Nothing wrong with what we got. Here we get some directors takes (very interesting) as well as a sit down with the cast. You also get an episode of a tv show called “The Unit” which is a good show on its own.
Overall Rating - 5/5 Stars
Video - 5/5
Audio - 5/5
Bonus - 4/5
Story - 5/5
Bottom Line
Buy it NOW. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you have not viewed the other seasons, it would be best if you did, but not really necessary to enjoy this season. It is setup so new viewers can join in and watch it. You wont understand who some of the characters are, why they act the way they do, or why they are going through what they are going through, but you can still watch it and enjoy it. I highly recommend the whole series, you can buy them from the links below.
